Dr. Gerald Koocher, APA President, presents the 2006 Distinguished Contribution Award to Dr. Cunningham at the annual convention in New Orleans.
The American Psychological Association Award for Distinguished Contribution to Research in Public Policy is bestowed for “distinguished empirical and/or theoretical contribution to research in public policy, either through a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of work.” Dr. Cunningham is the first psychologist working outside an academic or institutional setting to be honored with this annual award. The Distinguished Contribution awards are among the highest extended by the American Psychological Association, a professional organization that includes 80,000 members who hold doctoral degrees in psychology.

The Texas Psychological Association Award for Outstanding Contribution to Science is given in recognition of “significant scientific contribution in the discovery and development of new information, empirical or otherwise, to the body of psychological knowledge.” The Texas Psychological Association honors one psychologist annually for outstanding contribution to science.
